Dear Parent/Carer,

I hope you are all keeping safe and healthy in this strange time. We’ve done two full weeks of online learning in our Google Classroom now and are getting ourselves ready for the next three (at least!).

I’ve been really impressed with how the children have been engaging with the activities and reading their comments has made me smile. It is hard to gauge how many activities I should be setting for the children each week. I am trying to overcompensate with the amount posted as I do know that some children work very quickly and that others will simply want lots of activities to keep them busy. On the other hand, you or your child may feel overwhelmed by the amount posted. Please don’t worry about completing everything set – just do what you feel is right for your family.

Below is an outline of the work to be covered over the next few weeks in Class Five.

Writing

It is really important to keep your writing skills ticking over. At this time in the school year, Year Six have a big push on creating quality pieces of writing that include a wide range of features. Children brought home a copy of a tick list that shows what features they need to include. I will be setting a different writing task each week on a variety of themes.

Guided Reading

I’m taking this time to properly finish working on our Cogheart class book. It may seem like we have been working with this book for a while, but normally we would try and rush through it and not complete questions on each chapter. However we have the time to keep going with this book now and this will hopefully bring some normality to children as these activities are just like those we do in school. A new chapter or two will be set each week to read and respond to.

Spelling

I will post two spelling lists each week. Ideally, practise spellings from both lists. Have a go at writing words in sentences. Also use your Spelling Shed log in.

Numeracy

We will be using the White Rose Maths website to work on a variety of topics in the next few weeks. Most of these topics have already been covered in class, as is the nature of Year Six, where we have mostly finished the Maths curriculum by May. I will also post additional Maths activities to link with the WRMH work and to keep your arithmetic skills in check.

Science

We have an interesting and slightly different Science topic this half term. It’s all about Scientific Enquiry and the skills needed to investigate and find things out in Science.

Learning Expedition (History, Geography, Art and DT)

Our topic this term is The Victorians. I love this period of history as so much happened! We will look at key events and when they happened, life for the rich and the poor, education and inventions. I’m certain the children are going to use their research skills to teach me a few new things too!

P.S.H.C. E.

Over the next few weeks, we have a range of themes as a whole school to help children through this tricky time. The theme will be posted on Google Classroom each week. Please save any work that you create, or take photos of it, so that we can create a whole school scrapbook of what we all got up to.

Thank you for your support and please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions. You can contact me via email at [email protected].
