Hobbies and Interests / Reading Shelfies:

We have had some fantastic presentations so far! It’s great to share books with each other. It is also great experience for the children to stand up and deliver their presentations in front of their peers. Your help with assisting them to prepare their presentation is greatly appreciated.

Please check the timetables in your child’s homework books so that your child comes to school prepared when it is their turn.

PE:

Mr Pearson will be teaching one PE session a week this term on Tuesdays as we will also be going swimming on Thursday afternoons. Please make sure that children have a full indoor and outdoor kit in school on Tuesdays and swimming kits on Thursday. It is essential that all kit and uniform is clearly named.

Visits:

In the Summer we are going on a class trip to Murton Park where we will be visiting a Stone Age Village. This is a fantastic trip – but has a significant cost attached to it due to travel and workshop costs. The entrance to Murton Park is £18 and the coach to York is £12. We aim to fundraise over the course of the year to subsidise the cost of the visit so that it will just be £20 per child.

Parents Session:

A reminder that you are invited in to class on Wednesday 22nd January – 2 – 3pm to take part in our learning activities.

As always, if you wish to get in touch with us; please don’t hesitate to do so.

Writing

Writing this half term will be based on our topic of Rivers. We will be writing letters to people persuading them to look after the environment – in particular Rivers.

Spelling Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG)

Children have a weekly spelling lesson which looks closely at the phonics and spelling patterns they are bringing home. Copies of the exception words we focus on will be sent home too- it is helpful if the children can refer to the list and learn a few at home during the term. In spelling we will be focussing on homophones and suffixes.

In SPAG we will be revisiting using conjunctions and extended noun phrases – focussing particularly on using Subordinating Conjunctions.

Using all the SPAG skills learnt is encouraged in all the children’s writing and improving and editing work to include these skills is an important feature of writing tasks.

Reading

In Class 3 reading fluency continues to be a focus alongside comprehension skills. A deepening understanding of the meaning of the text is crucial to meeting their year 3 and 4 targets. Three focused strands to our teaching are:

Individual Reading

We listen to individual readers regularly and in addition we have a volunteer “Carole” who will listen to children each Wednesday PM. We are introducing our new reading books based on Year 3 and 4 recommended reads which we know will really motivate the children to read regularly. Your support with this would be wonderful. We will continue to use PM Benchmark to regularly assess children’s reading on an individual basis.

Guided Reading

This takes place weekly in small supported groups with a strong focus on comprehension skills. We will look at a range of texts retrieving information, predicting and inferring, investigating vocabulary and the features of non-fiction texts.

Class Novels

This half term we will be reading Wind in the Willows. It’s a classic that I am sure we will all enjoy!

Numeracy

In lessons with Mrs Sharples we will be focussing on Addition and Subtraction – starting off with mental addition and subtraction before moving on to written methods.

In lessons with Mrs Manthorp we will complete our work on measuring capacity before moving on to measuring time.

We will also continue to play Timestables Rockstars daily. It’s great to see that so many children are enjoying playing this at home too.

Topic

(History / Geography /  Art / DT)

In topic we are going to be focussing on Geography and learning all about Rivers.

We will be learning:

  • Where rivers start
  • Where they journey to
  • Fresh water and sea water
  • Estuaries and Deltas
  • Great Rivers of the world                       In DT we will be making a boat to journey to sea!

Science

In Science we will be comparing and grouping Solids, liquids and gases. We will observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled and measure rates of evaporation. We will identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the Water Cycle.

Music

We will continue learning notes on the Glockenspiel and begin a Charanga unit “Lean on Me” listening and appraising, playing games and learning and performing.

P.E.

Mr Pearson will be teaching PE on Tuesdays and the children will be swimming on Thursday afternoons at Skipton pool.

RE

Our topic this term is: What does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today? We will look at how Hindus show their faith and explore what is important to them including the metaphor for the journey of life. We will also look at the life of Mahatma Ghandi and describe examples of Hindu life in Britain today.

P.S.H.C.E.

In our Money Matters topic children will begin to understand finance and money and look at examples of costs and budgeting. They will begin to understand risk and debt and look at goal setting.
