As part of our celebration of British Science Week 2026, we were thrilled to welcome three local engineers from Fives Landis: John, Anne, and Derry. This year’s theme, ‘Curiosity: what’s your question?’, encouraged our students to embrace their passions and explore their most burning STEM questions.
John shared fascinating insights into Fives Landis, a company with over 200 years of manufacturing excellence, renowned for their cutting-edge automotive camshaft and crankshaft grinders. He explained how their work involves incredibly precise measurements, and the children had the opportunity to measure machine parts themselves, gaining hands-on experience in engineering.
Anne, a software engineer, engaged the students with simple coding problems and quizzes, sparking their interest in technology and problem-solving. Derry captivated everyone with stories from his impressive career, including his work on the Hubble Space Telescope and Mercedes Formula 1 engines.
The visit was a resounding success, leaving our students inspired and excited about the world of engineering. We are confident that we have some budding engineers among us!
