Ukraine

A few years ago, Year Three and Four took part in an e-twinning programme with a school in Kyiv, Ukraine. We exchanged letters, videos and made friendships whilst learning about our countries.

Mrs Sharples has kept in touch with the teacher at the school and as the news of the Russian invasion unfolded, we reached out to offer words of support. We asked what we could do to help and the teacher at the school suggested videos and messages to let the children know we are thinking of them.

We can't comprehend or imagine what the school staff, teachers and children are going through. Some families have left Kyiv and others are taking shelter in the school cellar. The Headteacher of the school is serving meals to soldiers. In the words of the teacher, we twinned with, 'no one was prepared for this Russian terror'.

On Tuesday, children came to school wearing yellow and or blue. We recorded and sent messages of support to the children of the school. We asked for a voluntary donation which will be shared with the school and a national charity set up to help with relief in Ukraine and the displacement of families caused by this conflict.

Currently there are upwards of one million people (mainly mothers with children) arriving in Poland, seeking shelter and support. As you will no doubt be aware, there has been a large Ukrainian community in Keighley for many years. The Good Shepherd Centre, based in Keighley, are collecting and transporting items to families and their children that have been displaced. Thank you so much for all your kind donations of:  bedding, pillows, blankets, warm clothing, nappies and toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, wet wipes and soap. You are all amazing and I count my blessings that I live and work in such a fantastic community!
