Year 1 –Autumn One

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to school, I hope you have all had a lovely summer and that the children are happy to be back and in a new class. I am delighted to be teaching your child this year and am looking forward the busy but fun half term ahead. On Tuesday 17th September there is a ‘Meet the Teacher’ event in school. I will look forward to discussing the learning that your child will be doing this year and the ways that we can work together to encourage your child to enjoy their learning this year. I hope to see lots of you then.

Reading Books – New reading books will be issued the first week back. There will be opportunity for your child to change their book each day. As always, we encourage frequent reading sessions at home with lots of talking about what is being read.

PE – PE will be on a Thursday and Friday this year and will be taught by Mr Pearson on the Thursday. Please ensure that we have a labelled PE kit in school at all times. Please also label ALL items of uniform. We often lose a significant amount of learning time looking for mixed up uniform and PE kits.

Staffing – I will be supported by the lovely Mrs Matthews in class two this year. Mr Pearson will teach the class on a Thursday afternoon.

Snacks – Children will continue to have access to school snacks in a morning. They can bring in their own fruit for snack if they would like to. A reminder that snack should just be fruit. We are a nut free school (we have a child in school with a nut allergy). Please do not allow children to bring anything into school containing nuts. All children should also have a water bottle in school each day.

Homework –Homework will be given at the start of each half term with tasks to do each week. When children have completed a task they should hand in their homework book. We will be sharing homework with the class every Friday. Children will also be given spellings to learn for a small test each week. The test will take place on Friday morning.

EYFS and KS1 School Nativity – Your child’s nativity is a very important event for you, them and us! As such I wanted to give you the dates as far in advance as possible. We have booked the church for the Nativity on the 12th December. There will be an afternoon performance at 2pm and an evening performance at 6pm.

Thank you for all your support.

Miss Spence

We will also do some writing linked to the book Stick Man by Julia Donaldson. We will retell the story of Stick man in our own words. Children will work on: repeating and writing a simple sentences; separating words with finger spaces; starting to use full stops to demarcate sentences; recognising and writing from memory capital letters, including for the pronoun “I”; using the joining word and to link words in sentences. Phonics – we will teach a 20 minute phonic lesson daily. This half term, year one children will be consolidating their learning of phase 3 from the end of last year before moving onto phase 4. Children should read as much as possible at home with lots of talk about what they are reading to assist their comprehension.

Maths

In Maths we will focus on number and place value and addition and subtraction this half term. Children need to be able to recognise, read and write all numbers to 20 in numerals and words. We will then start learning more about place value, looking at tens and ones in numbers up to 20. We will look at finding one more and one less than numbers to 20 as well as comparing and ordering numbers to twenty, using the language of more than, less than, equal to. We will work on number bonds to and within 10 and will learn to compare these number bonds. We will also use part whole models to begin to look at adding and subtracting.

Science

This half term children will be learning about the seasons of Autumn and Winter. Children will learn what a season is, what the weather is typically like during each season, which months are in which season and how the weather changes from season to season. Children will carry out various experiments to measure the weather and how it changes, and will record and talk about their results.

Topic

This half term we will be learning about the United Kingdom! We will be doing lots of map work, including learning to locate the UK on a world map as well as to locate the different countries and capital cities of the UK on a UK map. We will also learn about the 4 countries of the United Kingdom in more detail, exploring the characteristics of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Art / DT

This half term children will learn about the art of Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky. We will learn about the primary colours and will practice mixing these colours to make new colours. We will look at how to make paint colours darker and lighter.  Children will then create their own final piece of art work in the style of Kandinsky.
