Year 2 – Autumn 2 2019

Dear Parents,

I hope you have all had a lovely half term break and that the children feel refreshed and ready for the busy and exciting half term ahead in the lead up to Christmas. I was so pleased with how they all adjusted to being the oldest in the class last half term- well done year two children!

Reading Books – There will be opportunity for your child to change their book each day. As always, we encourage frequent reading sessions at home with lots of talking about what is being read. Please try to record when you have read with your child in their reading record.

PE – PE will be on a Wednesday and Thursday this year and will be taught by Mr Pearson on the Thursday. Please ensure that we have a labelled PE kit in school at all times. Please also label ALL items of uniform. We often lose a significant amount of learning time looking for mixed up uniform and PE kits.

Staffing – I will be supported by the lovely Mrs Matthews in class two this year. Mr Pearson will teach the class on a Thursday afternoon.

Snacks – Children will continue to have access to school snacks in a morning. They can bring in their own fruit for snack if they would like to. A reminder that snack should just be fruit. We are a nut free school (we have a child in school with a nut allergy). Please do not allow children to bring anything into school containing nuts. All children should also have a water bottle in school each day.

Homework –Homework will be given at the start of each half term with tasks to do each week. When children have completed a task they should hand in their homework book. We will be sharing homework with the class every Friday. Children will also be given spellings to learn for a small test each week. The test will take place on Friday morning.

Nativity – our Nativity this year will take place on 12th December in church at 2pm and 6pm. Please let us know ASAP if your child is not available for the 6pm performance so that we can allocate parts accordingly. Any help with costumes, props and/or set design is always very much appreciated! Please let me know if you would like to help.

Thank you for all your support.

Miss Spence

Below is an outline of the work to be covered over the next half term (Autumn 2 - 2019)  Year 2

Our class book for this half term will be Beegu. We will work towards writing a letter home to Outer Space, describing her time on Earth, in the role of Beegu. We will focus on using the correct vowel sounds when spelling, using a capital letters, full stops, exclamation marks and question marks, using some new adjectives and using conjunctions to extend sentences. We will also be doing a setting description based on the ice palace in “The Snowflake Mistake”. Phonics – we will teach a 20 minute phonic lesson daily. This half term, year two children will be moving onto or recapping phase 5b and 5c, which will introduce some new graphemes. Children should read as much as possible at home with lots of talk about what they are reading to assist their comprehension.

Maths

In Maths we will continue to focus on addition and subtraction. We will look at adding and subtracting a 2 digit number and a ones number and a 2 digit number and a tens number. We will then move onto adding and subtracting two 2 digit numbers. We will then move onto multiplication in the second part of the half term. We will look at adding equal groups and will then link this to multiplication and the multiplication symbol. We will also look at using arrays.

Science

This half term children will be learning about everyday materials. Children will learn to distinguish objects from the material that they are made from, describe the properties of materials using some scientific language, test the properties of some materials, identify and group different materials and compare different materials for their suitability for certain uses.

Topic

This half term we will be learning about how seaside holidays have changed over time! We will look at photos, pictures and adverts showing seaside holidays at different times and discuss what these can tell us about those times. We will also look at similarities and differences in seaside holidays from the past compared to now.

This half term children will design and make their own Christmas decoration. We will look at different examples of Christmas decorations, researching them and coming up with a list of features that the decoration must have. We will then design and make our Christmas decoration.
