Owls Class had a live link up with Garry the STEM Ambassador.  Garry works for Highways England as an engineer and has a passion for maths that he is keen to share.  In the first workshop, we learnt about fractals.  The aim was to describe a fractal and find some of them in nature.  The children created their own fractal, Sierpinski’s triangle, and then worked together to create larger versions of this fractal.

During the workshop the children:

  • Looked at some fractals in nature and described them
  • Learnt a little about some of the mathematicians that have investigated fractals
  • Created a version of Sierpinski’s triangle, and also joined these triangles together to make a giant triangle.
  • Looked for the number patterns created if you count the number of triangles in each level.

In upcoming workshops we will look at:

  1. Arithmetricks and Mobius strips
  2. Pascal's Triangle
  3. Complex systems
  4. Flexagons and finally a celebration of our work
