Governing Board update: October 2022

The autumn term governing board curriculum meeting took place Monday 10 October, in school.

Minutes of the September full governing board meeting were approved - these can be found on the school website.

As usual the meeting focused around the school vision: Learning to Live, Living to Love, Loving to Learn, with an emphasis on the curriculum.

Governors discussed the latest attainment data.

The attainment of the children remains strong across the school, and above national expectations in almost all areas. Attainment in writing, perhaps particularly for younger children is nevertheless a key area for future focus - it is acknowledged nationally that the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted on children’s writing progression.

Governors heard that the North Yorkshire County Council Adviser for the school has commented positively on the attainment data.

Governors thanked Mr Whitehead and the staff team for their work with the children through what was a very difficult academic year.

Mr Whitehead will be publishing attainment data information on the school website.

Governors also heard that the staff are reviewing the assessment policy.

Governors listened to presentations from Mr Whitehead and Ms Akrigg on computing and modern foreign languages, part of the rolling curriculum development programme, a key element of the school strategic plan, and were able to ask questions and seek clarification on approaches to both subjects in school.

Governors were pleased to see the strong links within the computing curriculum to safeguarding, through an emphasis on on-line safety - the safety and well-being of the children is central to the school strategic plan.

Governors also heard updates on special educational needs and disabilities, from Ms Akrigg, and on Collective Worship, from Mr Whitehead - both important aspects of school provision. Mr Whitehead and governors will be looking at the Collective Worship policy in the coming weeks.

Governors then discussed the approach to governor curriculum monitoring - curriculum monitoring is an important part of the governing board role and something governors are determined to ensure is as strong as possible.

Governors then approved updated school policy documents, including the Admissions Policy, the Child Protection Policy, and the Safeguarding policy, and reviewed the Home School Agreement.

The next governing board meeting is the autumn term Finance meeting, 14 November 2022, in school.
