Learning

Pupils in primary schools are required to complete statutory national assessments at key points in their education. At the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children are assessed against the Early Learning Goals, providing an overview of their development and readiness for Year 1. In Year 1, pupils undertake the Phonics Screening Check, which assesses their ability to apply phonics knowledge to read words accurately. In Year 4, the Multiplication Tables Check is administered to determine fluency in recalling multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. At the end of Key Stage 2, Year 6 pupils sit the statutory assessment tests (SATs) in reading, mathematics, and grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS). These assessments form part of the national accountability system, providing a benchmark of attainment and progress, and ensuring that support and teaching are effectively targeted to meet the needs of all pupils. Although statutory assessments play a role in tracking progress, they form only one part of a child’s learning journey and our main focus remains on providing a broad and engaging curriculum. Children are supported to approach statutory tests with confidence through well-structured teaching and opportunities to build their knowledge and skills over time.
