Hobbies and Interests / Reading Shelfies:

We have had some fantastic presentations so far this year!

Please check the timetables in your child’s homework books so that your child comes to school prepared when it is their turn.

PE:

Mr Pearson will be teaching two PE sessions a week. These will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please make sure that children have a full indoor and outdoor kit in school for these days. It is essential that all kit and uniform is clearly named.

Visits:

We are really looking forward to our visit to The Lemon Tree on Monday 11th November. Children will have lunch in school as normal, but have the tasting platter in addition.

In the Summer we are going on a class trip to Murton Park where we will be visiting a Stone Age Village. This is a fantastic trip – but has a significant cost attached to it due to travel and workshop costs. The entrance to Murton Park is £18 and the coach to York is £12. We aim to fundraise over the course of the year to subsidise the cost of the visit so that it will just be £20 per child.

Art:

We are very lucky that we have been allocated a specialist teacher from South Craven to come and teach Art on a Wednesday pm. She will be doing a unit of work with us based on Greek pots which we are really looking forward to.

Parents Session:

Instead of class assemblies, staff have collectively decided that we will invite parents in to class to share in learning and see what pupils have been doing over the term. Class 3 would like to invite you on Wednesday 22nd January – 2 – 3pm.

Writing

We are going to start the half term by taking part in some drama activities as we study Playscripts. We will be looking at the features of playscripts and how they are written before moving on to write and perform our own playscripts based on Odysseus and Cyclops.

For the second part of the half term we will be writing Non Chronological Reports and consolidating all the facts we have learnt about Ancient Greece.

Spelling Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG)

Children have a weekly spelling lesson which looks closely at the phonics and spelling patterns they are bringing home. Copies of the exception words we focus on will be sent home too- it is helpful if the children can refer to the list and learn a few at home during the term. In spelling we will be focussing on the suffix –ly and how it is used with various different root words. We will also look at different ways of making the shuhn sound.

In SPAG we will be learning when to use “a” and when to use “an.” We will also continue to express time and cause using conjunctions. When we write out NC reports we will focus on the use of headings and subheadings to aid presentation.

Using all the SPAG skills learnt is encouraged in all the children’s writing and improving and editing work to include these skills is an important feature of writing tasks.

Reading

In Class 3 reading fluency continues to be a focus alongside comprehension skills. A deepening understanding of the meaning of the text is crucial to meeting their year 3 and 4 targets.

Individual Reading

We listen to individual readers regularly and in addition we have a volunteer “Carol” who will come and listen to children each Wednesday PM. We use PM Benchmark to assess children before moving colour levels (shelves) to ensure comprehension matches their fluency.

Guided Reading

This takes place weekly in small supported groups with a strong focus on a range of comprehension skills.

Class Novels

This half term children have requested that we read War House by Michael Morpurgo which we are looking forward to starting.

Numeracy

Mrs Sharples will be teaching. In lessons we will finish off Place Value before starting on Additon and Subtraction. Mrs Manthorp will complete the work that they have been doing Perimeter before moving on to Mass and Capacity. We will also continue to play Timestables Rockstars daily. It’s great to see that so many children are enjoying playing this at home too.

Topic

(History / Geography /  Art / DT)

In topic we are continuing to learn about Ancient Greece. We will be looking at:

  • The Greek Empire
  • Significant events from Greece
  • Greek Gods
  • Greek Writing

In Art we will have a unit taught about Greek Pots.

DT will be a unit on making Greek Flatbreads. We will plan, design, make and evaluate.

Science

Science this half term is Earth and Space which children always enjoy!

We will learn about:

  • Earth, moon and sun
  • Planets and the Solar System
  • Night and Day

Music

The unit of music this half terms involves learning to play the Glockenspiel and creating a performance.

P.E.

Mr Pearson will be teaching PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Outdoor PE will be Invasion Games and indoor will be Dance.

Please ensure children have a full, named indoor and outdoor kit in school on those days.

P.S.H.C.E.
